Ten-year-old Jadon DeCourte jumped into a 15-foot-deep trench to save his drowning sister and lost his own life in the attempt.
Both children were laid to rest together eleven days later in Guyana.
The tragedy unfolded on March 3, 2026, during Phagwah celebrations in East Coast Demerara.
Eight-year-old Tiana DeCourte had slipped into the trench while attempting to fill a water gun.
The Rescue Attempt
Jadon saw his sister fall and instinctively tried to hold onto her to prevent her from going under.
Unable to support both their weights, he too was pulled into the deep water.
The siblings were found motionless in the trench along Melanie Damishana/Enterprise Access Road.
A Dangerous Location
The trench was located near a reservoir that residents say has long posed a danger to children.
Post-mortem examinations confirmed both children died by drowning.
Who They Were
Jadon dreamed of joining the Guyana Police Force and was remembered as a natural leader who loved playing football.
Tiana was an identical twin whose sister now struggles to sleep alone for the first time in her life.
Their father described the family's grief: "In our quiet moments, every five minutes, my wife breaking down crying and when she break down, I gone break down too because it's very hard."
Final Rest
The burial took place on March 14, 2026, at Bachelor's Adventure Burial Ground.
Jadon was remembered for values that many said were reflected in his final act - an attempt to save the sister he couldn't bear to lose.
